Philip & David - Scout Troop Leaders
Phillip: I put in a good few hours a week leading a group of boys and girls through a variety of activities. It's not just Scouts around a camp fire and collecting badges, although that's a part of it - Scouting is about supporting girls and boys, aged 6 to 25, by giving them opportunities for personal development. That could be anything from taking part in traditional outdoor activities to learning about computer skills. It's all about personal development through 'learning by doing' through responsibility. A Leader's role is to facilitate this by working with the young people.
David: You don't have to commit hours a week and years of your life to Scouting. It's just become part of my life. Supporting the young people is an absolute team effort that needs everyone from people sorting out refreshments or providing specialist skills in outdoor activities or computing for example. Even if you've got a couple of hours a month then there's something you can do.
You can support a range of different age groups:
• Beaver Scouts - 6 to 8 years
• Cub Scouts - 8 to 10 1/2 years
• Scouts - 10 1/2 and 14 1/2 years
• Explorer Scouts - 14 to 18 years
• Network - 18 to 25 years
